Branding your business can be fun. I know, I know – the thought of it IS daunting but
I’m here to make it a happy task.
Honest 🙂 – you know I wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t fun.
1 Numero uno
Get inspired. Soak in the branding all around you. What do you love? What websites makesyou reach for your credit card. Whose newsletters do you open eagerly. Take note of what works for you and what you don’t enjoy. See – easy peasy – you do this every day anyway. All you’re doing here is keeping track of what inspires you.
2 Tu-tu
Now’s your chance to define your brand. Get under the covers – what’s your business about? What sets you apart from the competition?
You can define your brand on several levels. Here comes the science part-
Think about your
Values
How do you do business? What’s a non-negotiable to you?
Vision
Whats’ your big why? Your story? Why did you start the business?
Target audience
Who are you customers? What is they need from you? When you understand your target
audience deeply, you can connect with them and speak their love language.
USP
What’s the one thing you can say about your business that no one else can? What’s your secret sauce? Flava? This is the cornerstone of your marketing strategy. You can hang your
crown on the USP hook.
Personality
The thing that makes you brand human. How do you want people to describe your brand?
Professional? Playful? Geeky?
Voice
This is how you use your words both online and offline. It’s the language and your tone. Are
you conversational and casual? Or more formal? Either is fine as long as you’re consistent
across your brand.
By answering these questions, you can create a sparkly clear consistent brand identity that
truly represents your business.

Super fun time – now it’s time to get creative. Fetch your sharpies or just muck around in
Canva. Experiment with colour, font, and design elements until you find something that
feels right. This is a great starting point for when you come to work with Graphic Designers
or VA because you already know what you don’t like.

Finally, get feedback from others. Don’t be scared – people love being asked for their opinion. Show your branding to clients, friends and trusted colleagues in your business network. Ask them to be honest (in a constructive way 😉 An external perspective is brilliant as part of refining your brand to make sure it connects with your target audience.
And now for the Golden Rules of branding your business.
- You can’t get it wrong because it’s your own business.
- Don’t overthink it.
- It’s not set in stone – you can change it tomorrow.
There ya go. Branding your own business can be fun.
Love to hear how you go.
Cheers
